Josh Boone’s The New Mutants trilogy was going to lead to an alien invasion after including the Warlock character.
The New Mutants director Josh Boone opened up about his plans for his trilogy involving the team, teasing that it would ultimately set up an alien invasion storyline through one iconic character. The director recently spoke to Slash Film about working on The New Mutants and explained that part of his pitch was making a comic book with all the characters he and writer Knate Lee wanted to use. The director revealed the only reason Warlock didn’t make it into the film was he was too expensive. Since he’s a techno-organic alien, it isn’t surprising that a larger budget would be needed to bring him to life.
“So after I made [The] Fault [in Our Stars], I ran back to Fox and said, ‘You’ve gotta let me develop New Mutants.’ Knate and I made them a comic book, which was like a PDF where we’d gone and taken frames from all these comics we love and strung them into a vision for what the series was going to be. The characters we chose were always the characters – we had plans, obviously, to bring in new characters in the next movie – the character of Warlock was featured in all the early drafts of the script, but it was so expensive that we weren’t able to do it.”
Director Josh Boone also followed up with his plans for the trilogy, revealing that The New Mutants‘ second film would’ve seen an alien invasion using Warlock. Earlier in the year he revealed that Antonio Banderas was also set to join the cast as Sunspot’s father, Emmanuel De Costa. Boone went onto say that the final film in The New Mutants trilogy would’ve adapted the Inferno storyline, which in the comics sees a demonic invasion of New York while Magik transformed into the Darkchylde, her dark self.
“Basically, cutting him out of the narrative allowed us to make the film. So our plan was always to have Warlock come back in the next one and try to tell his story then. They were all supposed to be kind of separate horror genre films: the first one’s like a rubber reality horror movie, the second one was supposed to be an alien invasion movie with Warlock, and then the third one was going to take all these elements from the X-Men crossover from the late ’80s and early ’90s called Inferno to be a kind of supernatural, apocalyptic horror movie. That was the plan.”
