#Roommates, as the country continues to mourn the tragic shooting death of Daunte Wright, the body camera footage from 13-year-old Adam Toledo’s fatal encounter with Chicago police has just been released. On March 29th, Adam Toledo was shot and killed by Chicago police in the Little Village section of town when police claimed that he had a gun and refused officer requests to stop running—the recent footage released now proves that Adam was completely unarmed.
@NYTimes reports, Adam Toledo’s death at the hands of Chicago police late last month, ranks as one of the youngest people shot by local authorities in several years. Toledo was killed while in the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Little Village. According to Chicago police following the shooting, Toledo was allegedly running down an alley with a gun in his hand and ignored officer commands to stop. However, in recently released body cam footage it clearly shows that Toledo was not only unarmed, but that he also responded to police calls to stop and put his hands up.
In response to the newly released footage, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who has been criticized for solely supporting the police’s account of what happened without seeing any proof, held a press conference asking residents to remain calm. “We must proceed with deep empathy and calm and importantly, peace. No family should ever have a video broadcast widely of their child’s last moments, much less be placed in the terrible situation of losing their child in the first place,” she said. She also added, “I see no evidence whatsoever that Adam Toledo shot at police.”
Mayor Lightfoot also expressed her sadness for Adam Toledo by stating that the community “failed” him. “Simply put we failed Adam. And we cannot afford to fail one more young person in our city…we have too many d**n guns on our streets.”
The footage of Adam Toledo follows a heartbreaking turn of recent events involving Daunte Wright, who was pulled over during a traffic stop and tragically shot and killed by former police officer Kim Potter. Potter has since been charged with manslaughter.
