President Joe Biden Pushes For Minimum Wage To Be Increased To $15 An Hour—‘No One Working 40 Hours A Week Should Live Below The Poverty Line’

Roommates, during his recent address to Congress, President Joe Biden discussed several issues plaguing Americans—and was specifically firm in his push to raise the nationwide minimum wage to $15 an hour. As he embarks closer on his first 100 days in office, President Biden addressed Congress with various plans and initiatives, however the minimum wage conversation garnered the bulk of the attention.

As he was addressing Congress regarding raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, President Biden firmly stated that “no one working 40 hours a week should live below the poverty line.” Currently, the national minimum wage is $7.25 and has not been raised since 2009.

However, while most Democratic members of Congress agreed with Biden’s plans, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, quickly said that he believed $15 is too high—and that $11 an hour is more likely.

Elsewhere during is congressional address, President Biden also introduced the American Jobs Plan—which would upgrade transportation infrastructure, such as roads, highways, railroads, airports and ports, while also investing in infrastructure for clean water.

“The American Jobs Plan creates jobs replacing 100% of the nation’s lead pipes and service lines so every American, so every child – can turn on the faucet and be certain to drink clean water,” he said during his address.
